Question : '85 Alternator has internal or external regulator?
I am confused. I am farily sur eit is internal built-into the stock SI Alternator. Right? I am converting to a CS144 this week, and am trying to make heads or tails of the 3 cables that connect on the new CSW wiring, vs the 2 on the stock wiring harness to my old alternator.

One-wire Alternator:
Is another name for the Self-Exciting Alternator mentioned above. You only need connect the battery wire (one-wire).
Two-wire Alternator:
Most standard and all self-exciting regulator alternators will work using the two wire setup. Two wire means that you use the battery wire and an ignition wire to activate the alternator. With this setup the alternator starts charging as soon as the engine is running
Three-wire Alternator:
This setup uses a battery wire, ignition/warning light wire and voltage sensing wire, Three wires.

Ohh ok.. Makes sense, I was just wondering why the CS alternator has 3 wires in it's wiring harness (and the seperate POS wire) and my SI ('85) only has 2 in the wiring harness and the seperate POS wire.
On that website, I can get the adapters premade, but one is for cars without the NOCharge/Warning light, the other one for cars With it.
I presume our vettes have this? I have never seen it go off so Im not sure.. :conehead

hey nuke, i just did this swap last month. you only need to connect the two existing wires to the new connector(the 3 wire one). the extra wire is for the newer models that need to read voltage from that wire for the instrument display, which we dont need. the old 85's use a feed from the starter solenoid to power the volt guage i believe. anyway my volt guage reads just fine the way i have it set up. just make sure you reconnect them to the same ones..field(F) and stator(S). you will like the new alternator, it bolts up just fine, and with all my power equipment on, including my stereo with amp, etc...it seems to supply plenty of power. if you have long tube headers, you may have to modify one of the rear brackets(the long one) to clear the exhaust tubes.
