When I stripped the engine on my 87 it was 0.080". The piston to deck height was 0.029" plus the original 0.051" thick head gaskets. I'm going to aim for 0.038"-0.045" using 0.028" thick head gaskets. I have a feeling that although 0.035" is a "recommended" minimum for a steel rod engine, it may be a bit marginal for one that will hopefully cover a lot of street miles and accumulate some carbon. you should check the deck at both the intake and exhaust side of the piston face because the piston to wall clearance will allow the piston to rock at TDC and this is when the piston is closest to the head. :chevy
