I've had K&N's in my truck and in my vette for years. I also had them in my motorcycle before I sold it. I dont think your really going to tell the difference between the good aftermarket filters. They should all filter better than OEM or that no-name junk they sell at parts stores.
Amsoil always says there stuff is better. K&N's are good. I run an aFe, which is like a K&N but the oil has a yellow dye instead of red. If I was buying an after market air filter again I would buy an Accel Kool Blue http://www.mrgasket.com/mainpage.html
Nothing wrong with OE AC Delco filters except that you have to change them. I have K&N in both of mine, doesn't really make any difference performance wise, but they flow just as good dirty as the stock paper does clean. Also they are warranted for 1,000,000 miles.

:iagree:
My experience exactly on several other vehicles. I'll just keep a fresh ACDelco on my Corvette...takes less time to replace a stock unit than to clean a K&N.
i've heard they are all the same when first installed. but when the filters begin to get dirty, k&n's are better. i couldn't tell you because before i drove my car i did all the regular maintenance and the first thing i did was put a k&n in.
I'm the original owner of my '86 Vette, and personally I got annoyed with changing out my AC Delco Air Filter every 5,000 miles.
It wasn't so much the trouble to change it out, or the cost of replacement...it was the thought of 'dirt' getting into my engine. I never did care for any of the 'paper design type filters.'
Once K&N released their product, and I researched it, I quickly knew that product was for me.
As mentioned above, by another forum member, the throttle response was very noticeable performance wise, compared to the AC Delco Filter...so that was a huge plus.
When I change my oil at 3K mile intervals, I notice that my oil still looks good,
...not real dirty. I always 'feel' the oil that is draining out...and give it a rub between my thumb and forefingers,...just to see if I can get a sense of any particles of dirt or metal. So far so good.
156K miles on the OD, and I'm very happy with K&N...not that I'm not open to change, but I think I'll keep what I know to be working for me. :yesnod:
K&N - It filters as good or better than an OEM filter due to the fact it has an oil film on the paper element. It will flow as good or better than OEM if re-oiled properly. Over oil the paper element and you could have less air flow and the oil may find it's way to the MAF.
Here are some steps I take when using a K&N:
1) I always clean the filter and re-oil when new out of the box. That way I know for sure how much oil it has.
2) Blow off the dirt and save your OEM filter. Stick it back in when you are cleaning the K&N filter since it will need time to dry after cleaning. You can also remove the K&N and save if you are selling, trading it in for another vette which can use teh filter. Or just sell it to someone.
3) I have never been able to tell any difference in power or gas mileage between a relatively clean OEM filter and a K&N. Anyone who says there is a difference either replaced a really dirty filter or are one hell of a calibration machine and should be on Ripley's believe it or Not. :D
4) You can't find the Ac-Delco filters anywhere, so therefore can be a pain to buy when you need one. Dealerships carry them most of the time but they are $$$. I did get lucky one time and found one at Trak Auto. The counter guy said what kind of filter is that. That things has been sitting for a long time on the shelf and he never knew what kind of car it went to. He said he was shock to see they had it in stock. But they would not be ordering anymore of those filters. So not problems now for me. I'm just change it on demand.
There are other good filter out there which fllow good also. I just like the fact that the kn ahs oil which helps trap jjst about everything and still flows well.
Can anyone compare the K&N filter to the Kool Blue filter as far as (1) quality of construction and (2) fitment? (I believe the K&N comes with strips of foam to seal the gaps between the filter and the housing; does the Kool Blue filter fit the housing without the tacky foam strips?). Thanks.
Nope......K&N is the best as far as I can see.......Lots of flow...and easy maintance....
You bet.....K&N Filter's are the best for our vette's....
again...just my thought's...

it seems that the air filters dont really provide that much restriction. its more the air box (expecialy in f-bods) and its location (if its sucking up hot air).
once you have a "high flow" air filter, the differances are really negligable. Seeing how you will only gain 1-2 hp from a K&N, how much more can you gain from the blue ones? .2hp over the K&N?

UD, glad the K&N is working out for you...millions of people swear by them, so they can't be bad.
On to the oil thing; if you can actually FEEL anything in your oil, your engine is hurting. The filter will remove any particles large enough to detect without a mircroscope, so don't depend on your senses to warn you of any potential problems.
