Keyless Entry Mod on an 86
It works!
Thanks to Bryan Thompson.
I should add that it wasn't easy since you need to dismantle the dash and remove the dash pad. It took me about 16 hrs (I took my time). Man is the TDM hard to get at - never actually saw it - had to unplug it by feel. Lots of wires to splice - 10 on the TDM harness, 2 at the headlight switch, 2 at the console hatch release button, and 4 on the door lock circuit.
I went with the GM kit because Bryan's web page recommended it and he had already done all the home work to wire it up to the 86's Theft Deterent Module (TDM). It flashes the parking lights and sounds the horn on lock and unlock. One flash on lock, two flashes on unlock. It pops the hatch. It locks doors on ignition on and unlocks on ignition off. You can disable the horn and or auto lock/unlock. It also has a panic button that sets off the factory vehicle alarm - horn sounds.
It's wired to disable the TDM when it ulocks the doors, so it doesn't sound an alarm. Bryan has very nicely integrated it with the factory alarm system.
An after market would probably be cheaper, but then you would have to determine the wiring hook ups based on the after market system.
The way to prevent this is to use an extra SPDT relay to isolate the VKE1000 and the door lock switches.
Other than that, his web site is excellent and was very helpful.

Please tell me though, is there anything about the PKE1000 system that you don't like? I should be able to purchase this from the GM dealer I suppose... or maybe Jeff Kopp?
Did you have to splice into those wires by feel without seeing them? That sounds frightening.
The PKE 1000 is OK no problems or short comings. Once you unplug the harness from the TDM you can pull it down from under the dash and see it just fine. Plugging it back in was by feel.
