My 86 L-98 is bucking/missing..not normal. (Right on take off 800-1300rpm is when the problem is presistant) it is just fine when you take off under load, but in a parking lot or stop and go traffic, its hell. It eather wants to go or stop(put the clutch in). when you hold the throttle steady or are on again off again it starts going nuts.
I have already replaced the u-joints, TPS, Plugs, wires, cap, rotor. And i am 99% sure that all of those are functioning properly. I cant figure out what the issue is.
I heard the cam/distributor gears are brass and wear out over time. is this true? my car only has 60k mi. do you think this could be the issue?
how would i go about cheaking/ replaceing these parts? Thanks!!
no i have not cheaked eather but i think that that would cause a problem throughout the driveing rmp not just down low. i should look in to it never the less.
Sounds like a problem I had. It ended up being water in the fuel tank, a bottle of alcohol from napa took care of it. I worked on the car for a month, testing and replacing my E.G.R. and catalytic converter and others. Each time I took it for a road test it started great, ( water and fuel separated ) once it mixed I was back to square one. I wish I would have started with the basics. With 120,000 miles on the car it needed those new parts anyway, right??? Beware some of the "fuel conditioners" are harmful to the o2 sensor. I hope this helps someone...
If all else fails, check your canister purge setup. It's one of the only things I can think of that starts 'happening' at low RPMs and during throttle tip-in.
Either a vacuum leak, incorrectly routed hoses, or unplugged connectors can cause problems with this system. I had one of the above, Bill (and Jeff I think) had clogged return lines. Heck, even an incorrect gas cap could probably cause problems.
Check your voltage with a meter, and have the battery checked. I had a similar problem turned out to be the AC Compressor shorting out, I think Im real lucky it didn't fry the ECM. Also go for a test ride and be sure to shut off all electrical, radio AC, interior fans, etc. and see if that helps.
I agree with the suggestion on vaccum, put a gauge on it and see what the readings are. In my experience it seems that most problems like this are basic issue like vaccum or spark.
