I have the first week in July blocked out to do my actual swap. I'd sure appreciate it if you could jot down any notes that come to mind on "pitfalls" to plan on or look out for. Since you're getting your hands dirty now, you know what's for real, not in a book. I'd like to gain from your experience and maybe make my swap go a little easier.
For one thing, I notice you just bolted the chain to the engine. I was sort of thinking about buying an engine leveler. Did you regret not having one? Did the chain hit the plenum? Is that why you removed the plenum already?
By the way, I see the little electric Jeep in the background there. My kids had one of those too. They're both too big now and we got rid of it a couple years ago. That brings back memories.
I see you left the hood on. That's cool. Nice hoist. Ditto on detailing the engine compartment. Let us know when you fire it up so I can stick my head out the door to listen
Hey Dave, no problem, I will happily answer any questions I can, so far the only surprise was that I had one bolt on the upper bell housing I did not see till I could not get the engine to separate from the bell housing. Once it got it out it slid out nicely.
An engine leveler would have been nice but I did not have one.
I took off the plenum just because I wanted to see as much as possible around the back of the engine between the firewall.
One cool thing was that the engine hoist leg with the caster on it, rolled right under the drive up ramps and there were no obstructions.
Also I did pull the crank pulley cause it was really close to the power steering rack, so when you “slide” the engine forward it gives you more room.
Re: the JEEP, yeah, at the ripe age of 45 we have a 5-year old son. The wife and I started late, like,,, after we were married 15 years!
 :yesnod:
Hey Tim, yes,, I had already pulled the pan beforehand, only because I was looking for "shrapnel” form the bad rod bearing. :smash: :skep:
My general approach to the engine removal was to unbolt everything possible like the exhaust manifolds, Y-pipe, oil pan, crank pulley, I pulled the distributor out beforehand, plenum, runners, valve covers,,,, basically some of this could have stayed on but I just wanted to make sure there were no obstructions.
Glad to hear that you are coming closer to finishing your project. I'm taking a little bit longer, but can feel that I'm geting closer!
I see that you and your wife decieded to have chieldren "later in life" too.
How do you do it? I retired and had our's after 18 years of marrage, and I havn't been busier in my life!
Thanks again! I am in no rush and hope to claen the engnie bay for the next week or so. I am trying to limit the work/project to weekends and hope to have it running by early May.  :D
