Default 400 SB question.

Could a 400 SB work in a 86 Vette? I was comtemplating it but would the sensors and Computer work in a 400 opposed to a 350?

Physical dimensions of the 2 are the same as a 350. that is what my 406 origianlly was. The only place there was even an ounze of concern was the one bround point above the oil filter. I just moved it to the bell housing.

other than that they are equals. there are several other things to concider that are not sensor related. Like the flexplate, balancer, and a few other odds and ends.

what are your plans?

:iagree: DITTO, the balance issue can cost some bucs, like buy a balanced rotating assembly, or you can buy a different 153 flywheel made for a 400 CI or neutral or internal or external balance dampers depending on your setup, or you can try to use some of your parts like I did.

All in all, I used my stock distributor and flywheel, that was it. :lolg:

Higher horsepower. No replacement for displacement. Also heard it was easier to get the 400 to go faster.

You can make anything go faster with the *right* components that match and compiment one another. But that is the hard part. Go with a known setup, even it costs a little more and you will be happy. Unless your an engine guru and have tons of years of engine building experience, and you start mixing and matching, just to put something together with heads, pistons, intake etc. you most likely will wind up with a turd.

You have to ask yourself some simple questions. what am i gonna do with the car? What are my expectations? Daily driver? these will lead you to were you need to be then look at other setups that people are using for the same reasons and make your choise from there?

it kills me to see people posting questions like will this cam work? xxint xx exh, w/ a Super Ram intake........... Why not just get a 219 cam that is proven OVER and OVER again that will work flawlessly and utilize the intake etc you have.

I don't mean to sound harsh and this is not pointed at you at all. The questions you are asking are valid ones. I just don't want to see you go down some unbeaten path and be disappointed.

For me I don't drive the car everyday and I primarily want it for the strip, so running $6.00/gal, homebrewed race gas @ ~9miles to the gal is not a real big deal. I do drive it one the street too, but its the price you have to pay to have have the best of both worlds. For someone that drives all the time, you can do it like mine, but you will have to stay off the gas pedal and even at that with 93 octane, you will be spending a fortune.

If you need any help let me know.
