Hi.
What you has bought is as far as I see not TPIS headers for the C4 corvette. I have newly got mine and they do not look like the ones in the picture on ebay in the link you enclosed. I would recommend you to go in on TPIS page under exhaust and have a look at the headers shown there for the C4 corvette.
You are right that the coating is to have a nice look and also the most important thing to decrease the temp in the engine room.
Wrappining the headers is good due to keep the heat inside the headers but it strains the metal as the headers become very hot and the metal structure can be changed and the metal brittle so on weak points the headers can start to leak. If they are ceramic coated this should be sufficient. I am sure that here are many views upon this topic. Go in to Jet Hot page and look at the temp reduction the ceramic coating does.
I have tpis headers on my car but they don't look like that. I have mine jet hot coated and installed and ran them like that for a short time but put header wrap on them because of the heat. I have been using the wrap for three years with no problems. If the wrap ruins my headers I will buy new ones and wrap them also. I'm not willing to put up with the heat coming through the firewall and cooked plug wires. As to the headers on E-Bay looks like you probably gave $350.00 for a $100.00 pair of headman headers. :U
I have the hookers and I wrapped them partially. Instead of wrapping them fully with 2 rolls, I used1 roll and wrapped the primaries near the spark plugs and near the oil filter area and starter area. ( didn't originally wrap them and melted a bunch of wires, but lots of guys doing just fine without wrap)I pulled the headers couple nights ago. Ceramic coating looks fine after about a year and a half.
I recently purchased some hoojer super comp headers ceramic coated, waiting on the Y- pipe to do the installation. Is it really necessary to wrap these? I'd like to know for sure before I install, can i just wrap around key areas?
Thanks
Those appear to be Lingenfelter headers. They look almost identical to mine. Cept mine has a solid flange not split like those pictures suggest. http://www.vetteracer.com/pics/Vette/Right%20Header.jpghttp://www.vetteracer.com/pics/Vette/Left%20Header.jpg
Note, mine are older/original headers, as the ones in the ebay auction look like. 2.5" primary flange. For about $50 you can upgrade to a 3" flange at an exhaust shop. I had that done to mine and turned out great.
So feel good! You got a better header then you thought! But raise hell with the seller anyways :D .
As for the wrap, the Ceramic coating on the older LPE headers is pretty bad, and it will flake off (look at my pics). You might try giving LPE a call and see if they will recoat them, I know they offer recoating on their new ones. Otherwise leave the wrap, it will help cool your enigne compartment. The downside, it will kill your headers faster... how much faster? Nobody has ever been able to say...
