Has anyone out there ever changed their turn signal flasher? The service manual from GM states that for my year car (1987) the flasher is located under the right side of the dash to the left of the ECM. I have been completely underneath the dash with flashlights and mirrors and cannot find anything that looks remotely like the flasher ( there is a picture of one in the Chilton manual). No stinkin' purple or blue wire, no nuthin'. It just can't be that hard to find.
Any help from someone who has found and or changed theirs would be wonderful :chevy
It's located just to the left of the ECM inside the right side of the dash. It is buried very close to the ECM and looks like a small, round, white canister shaped unit enclosed in a spring clip. To remove it, just push up on the canister to release the clip from the bracket.
If the canister cannot be found in that location, look on the left side of the steering column. Your are still looking for a canister shaped unit held by a spring clip.
Way up, approx. 6 inches up, inside the dash, there is a small silver flasher-type canister. But with all the wiring harnesses and connectors, you would have to be a skinny-handed contortionist to be able to get it out. Is there something else I'm supposed to be removing besides the under dash panel? I'm not sure if I was able to reach it, I would be able to replace the new one.
I just replaced mine in my 86'. If an 87' is the same you need to take the dash matt of and it should be on the left hand side. When I replaced mine I made up a couple of leads and relocated it behind the cassette deck, for easy'r access if change is ever needed again.
I was able to get to it. I just smashed my hand right up there. After I saw the purple and blue leads, I knew I had it. I have also relocated it to a more convenient site. (Sometimes I really wonder about the engineers who thought some of that car's systems up)
Anyway, thanks for the help.
Yep, Everythings good to go. I had hazard lights so it had to be a flasher or God forbid, some grounding or wiring junk. We are up and blinking. Now I just have to replace the driver seat switches. Very bad design, putting them in the side bolster where you mash them everytime you exit the car, or water drips right on them when you open the door. I noticed the newer cars are better about their seats. Thanks again.
