Default Relocation of O2 sensor Hooker 2149+Y

When I put my Hooker 2149 headers and Y pipe on last year I used the existing O2 bung in the #7 pipe that is std on the 2149s. I was uncomfortable with only measuring the output of cylinder 7. This winter I picked a new bung and had my exhaust guys weld the bung right at the point the Hooker Y pipe comes together. I finally got my car out today, ran about 60 miles and then hooked up to my laptop (I use WinALDL). Not only did the car seem to run cleaner, the voltage readings from the sensor had a perfect swing variation. I used a heated Oxy Sensor from a 94 Vette.

This is something I really need to get sorted out when I put mine in. Where exactly did you locate it, and clearance issues?

Dawg Gone I have got to buy a digi camera. I put the bung right in the middle of the Y where the two pipes from the headers siamese together. When the sensor is screwed in it points right at the rear of the tranny (700R4). There is at least two inches of clearance from any other object, and is protected by the Y pipe itself. The local midas shop welded the bung into the hole I cut with my trusty Dremel at no charge. Took them about 2 minutes. The longest part of this project was making a long set of wire leads from the sensor to the relay I mounted on the fenderwell just below the master cylinder. The leads are made from a 4 wire trailer connector harness I picked up at the local parts outlet.

Outstanding. I wonder if I have that kind of room with my 6spd. I'm putting in the same headers/y pipe and haven't figured out a good location yet. Of course I also haven't gotten under the car yet either

What are you using to trip the relay. I think I'm going to tap into the fuel pump relay.

If it works, then that's great. It seems like a long way from the engine though. Do you think there is any "lag"? I also have heated sensors and mine are located just after the collector. My o2's don't seem to swing very rapidly at idle. I was thinking about trying to get them closer. Do you have a part number for the O2 sensor you are using. Mine is a Bosch something or another. Don't know the number.

The part # for the sensor I'm using is Autozone #163003 15703 $49.99. I feel that one advantage of this location is that it is at the hottest part of my exhaust system, where the two header pipes come together. I am essentially reading the exhaust gases from both banks (all 8 cylinders) with one sensor. One problem would be if the header to y-pipe flange gaskets develop leaks. This may introduce outside air before the sensor. I pulled the relay operating voltage from the ignition hot wire at the wiper moter. Just probed around with a needle until I found a wire that was hot when the mill was churning.
