I am thinking of putting a trans temperature guage in the 700R4 in my 86. Does anyone know where to locate the sending unit? Do it go into the pan or is there a place on the trans itself?
I'm planning on installing a trans cooler. My plan is to put a sensor on the line that goes to the cooler.
I haven't been shopping around yet for hardware so I don't know what's available to make the connections, yet.
Easiest way :iagree:
Should just be a metal tube with hose barbs on each end. Cut out a section of tube and replace with the sender assembly. I'm planning on doing this in the near future myself
I plan to install one while doing my engine swap. I will pull the trans pan and have a bung welded into it. The problem, in my mind, to installing it in the "out" line, is that it will always indicate the temp of the hottest fluid and not the temp of the fluid being injested by the pick up.
To avoid adding a guage to my dash, I plan to install a toggle switch to alternate between the trans and engine oil sensors. I'll be able to read both from the stock guage.

Here is a shot of mine installed. Just cut the same length out of the existing line and replace the cut section with the sensor. Its really quite simple.
I was worried about the location being next to the header collector, but I am yet to see temps over 130-150, granted its cold here but even at idle the temp never rised from radiant heat, so it should be fine.
Here is the guage itself, we made the backing for it to make it look complete.
Here is another shot of the sensor itself in relation to the collector. As said before, it hasn't been a problem yet, and doubt it will be.
Let me know if you need anything. By the way the guage and sensor are B&M  [IMG][/IMG]
