Default LT1 MAF question

My friend has a 96 LT1. The car has been running very poor & dying when throttled. When the MAF sensor is unplugged, it smoothes right out. He doesn't have a scan tool, but all signs are pointing to a bad MAF. He said a new on from the Chevy house is around $400. Any better suggestions?

Take the MAF out and take a look at it, see if it is gummed up at all (usually fron K&N Filter oil) or see if one of the fragile little wires is broken. If it looks visibly OK see if you can get a local Chevy shop to test it. If it does come back bad then I would recommend you go to Jeff Kopp to get a better price on a replacement

Check out Ebay, they have plenty of Granitelli MAFs for LT1s for less than $300. It may or may not live up to HP claims, but it is IMO a better option to a stock one. BTW it is also about 2lbs lighter. Good luck. :chevy

New MAF from Jeff Kopp was around $220. Just a heads up, I had the same symptoms, would be idling all over the place, disconnect the MAF and it would smooth right out, so I replaced it with a new one. Didn't fix it (argh, &%@@#$%) Still trying to figure it out.

That is a hint though, when you pull the MAF the PCM goes to speed density mode. Wonder if it's a bad O2 sensor(s), how old are they?
