I hope this isn't too dumb of a question......but, when a person speaks of having their computer reprogrammed, they ususally mention purchasing one of these programmers for some god-awful amount of money.
My question is, why would anyone actually purchase one of these things for themselves, when (I would presume) one could simply go to a shop that has one and simply pay them a fee for effecting the necessary changes?
Like for example, I want to change the T-stat and put some rear-end gears in. Wouldn't it make money-sense to pay someone else to do the reprogramming, (as long as they don't see "Corvette" and equate that with extra dollar signs)?
I guess I should also ask, just how much as a general rule does it cost to have the 'pooter reprogrammed?
Re: Question about hypertech programming (MagikDraggin)
Hypertech reads the VIN and stores the stock program within itself. I cannot let you use it without first putting my stock program back into my car, thus "clearing" the Hypertech for further use.
Re: Question about hypertech programming (95AquaC4)
Ahhh. so that's it? Ok, that makes sense now. So tell me, is a computer illiterate person as I am, going to be able to figure out how to use one of these thingies? And does it "stay" with the car, or do you use it and then simply pack it away for some future use?
Re: Question about hypertech programming (MagikDraggin)
It's very simple to use. On screen menu, just answer the questions. just upload your program, and place it in your toolbox until you need it again. i should add...don't expect a performance gain with Hypertech. It is however good for changing the speedo for rear gear changes, fan on/off, 160 degree stat, and in my case firming up my shifts and adjusting the shift points.
Re: Question about hypertech programming (MagikDraggin)
Hypertech is pretty easy to use. It runs a menu question by question and you select yes or no to each question and that is how it sets up the programming. Mkae sure to get the right Hypertech for your '96. Will require a different part # than the one for 94/95 because '96's are OBD-II.
Re: Question about hypertech programming (MagikDraggin)
Do you mean that you just can't "clear the memory" and start over?
Karl
Nope. If we could do that, we could just keep clearing the unit and using over and over again.
Ie: If I wanted to sell you mine, I would have to download my stock program back into my PCM. THEN, the Hypertech could be used on another vehicle. It would simply read the new VIN.
Re: Question about hypertech programming (MagikDraggin)
Agree with all the comments about no increae in performance, nice for lower temp fan turn on, stiffer shifts. Another nice feature of the Hypertech (only if you have a 96 or later) is you can purchase a module that will pull engine codes and allow real time scanning of things like MAF flow, ECT, O2 reading, etc. I have one and it works on both my 96 Vette and 96 Impala (even though my Hypertech is specific to my Impala).
edit> oh yea, you can find them used for ~$200, not too bad of a deal.
