Measuring pushrod length, must use solid lifter or...?

Also, some say you can just go by a witness mark on the valve stem while on the base of the cam (no turning of the engine). Doing this I come up with a 7.400 p/r putting the rocker tip just on the inboard side of the valve stem center. Can I go with that??
I tried taking a reading turning the engine with my hyd. rollers, but when they plunge, there is no way the reading can be accurate throughout the lift range. Then I pull out a set of solid lifters I have(for the same application) and the distance from roller to pushrod seat is a 1/2" different, I don't see how this could give me an accurate reading. So if I need to use a solid roller, which one?
