Default 700r4 Experts please check in...

Alright....I have rebuilt the tranny with Transgo High Performance shift kit and 2200-2400 stall converter. I have put about 200 miles on it and I have only one problem(so I think). While cruising on the expressway....I can go about 60mph and it will stay in third and will not go into 4th(OD) unless I let off the gas....once I touch the gas pedal again....it goes back to third. My tach says that I am at 2600-2800 and the "upshift" light even comes on...I am sure this is not good for the tranny...any ideas?

P.S. I have adjusted the TV cable from one way to the other with no luck.

I've read where the stock 3-4 (drive to overdrive) spring were used because of problems with that spring included with the shift kit. Others I'm sure will chime in.

I have found the 700R4/4L60e is very sensitive to fluid level. To get my 4L60e to do the 3-4 shift right I have to tweek the fluid level just right. I always start with the fluid 1-2 quarts low and slowly increase the level by 1/2 quart as I use my "test loop" to verify correct operation (an uphill highway section with no place for cops to hide).

UPDATE(sorta)...on the way home...I found that under slower speeds(under 45-50) it does shift into OD...but when on the expressway..it stays in 3rd unless I let off the gas.....ideas maybe?

For the problem fix I was describing, I had to let off the gas pedal from WOT to ~80% of WOT until I got the fluid level right. Until I set the fliud level just right, it would stay in 3rd at WOT. Not sure what you mean by let off the gas.

There is a valve that they sell in Summit to adjust the throtle position needed to downshift into 3rd. This allows you to stay in OD even when you have the hammer down some. I'll try to find the part for you and post it again.

That valve is only for F-body cars and not vettes. Vettes were the only cars with the 700r4 that could stay in OD at WOT after around 110-120mph (Comes on what your gearing is of course)..

I had the same problem. It would shift out of overdrive as soon as I touched the throttle. I replaced the kickdown valve and now it works fine. I also have the transgo kit. I bought the valve from Probuilt Transmissions in California www.probuilt.net but it was a GM part. I don't have the number handy but the dealer should be able to get it for you. To replace it you have to remove the pan but not the valve body. A c-clip holds it in place in the pump area.

Is this one of the valves IN the pump itself or in the valve body? Any other ideas????
