i backed my 86 up on ramps and took a quick look underneath but the wheels did not fit in very well and i did not trust it. didn't want to get smoooooshed
but i am looking to replace it. if anyone has done this advice is appreciated.
Not difficult, but be prepared for a gas bath. You'll have to pull forward onto the ramps as the fuel filter is located on the passenger side inside the right body cavity (at least it is on my LT1 - kind of behind the right "gill" fender).
Make sure you have adequate ventilation and whatever you do, don't create any sparks! Make sure you relieve pressure in the fuel lines as well. You can do this by removing the fuel pump fuse and turning the engine over (with the gas cap off). Good luck! :)

Re: fuel filter ? (oblivia)
There was a post about 2 or 3 weeks ago on how to do it by removing part of the inner fender. It sounded like it would be a lot better than getting under the car like I did. Do a search for the topic.
I change mine from under the car. I use jackstands at all fours so its up nice and high. Even with the cross brace on Its still not too hard to replace. I use the correct flare wrech, and a stubby open end to get the job done.
Heres a question for everyone. How many have changed the return fuel filter? I didn't even know it was there until Last year when I pulled my a/c-blower motor housing out from under the hood. Can't see it being as critical as the main filter, but while I was there it got swapped out.
I found the job not too difficult, although I would plan on a few oz. of gas pouring out. About as much as the fuel filter will hold. I changed mine from underneath but before I did, I loosened the lines that run up the passenger side fenderwell. You will have a lot more play in the line which will make the job go much easier. Have a fire extinguisher handy and disconnect your battery to be safe.
Fuel filter is a breeze on an 86 you dont need ramps just a jack and stand. Pull fuse for fuel pump, start car until it runs out of gas, crawl under undo clamp that holds filter and remove both ends of fuel line, you may get a little gas on you but just be carefull. Make sure you put the new filter in the right way look for arrow, reinstall, put fuse back in and your in buisness. The filter on an 86 is on the passenger side at forward end of door, you cant miss it. :D
