6* BTDC is the stock setting. Some of us have had luck going higher, some have had to go lower. No 2 engines are identical. The only way to really know yours likes is to slap on a scan tool and watch knock retard through the RPM band or hit the track and watch your MPH between runs.
That being said I started at 6* one night and made a pass. I changed it to 8* and made another pass gaining 1mph. I bumped it again 9* and made another pass gaining another 0.5mph. So with 3* I gained 1.5 mph and about 0.1 in ET. All 3 passes had nearly identical short times and 1/8s, but the last 1/8 was stronger.
Now I just have to wait for ski_dwn_it to come in and yell at me telling me that my proof is flawed. ;) :D
I just changed mine from 6 to 8 degrees.
Engine "feels" a lot better.
AutoXray IS showing a few more knock counts with the 91 octane fuel I can get around here.
I haven't seen much knock retard (3-4 degrees) on WOT runs so I'm going to leave it at +8 for right now.
May sneek it up to 10 if all appears well for the next couple of weeks.
ok. So start with 6 and look for counts, then start testing higher and higer?
Is knock count all I need to worrie about, or should I test the new settings on the track aswell?

Re: set the timing. (devilfish)
As far as performance goes, I've heard, that retarding a bit will get you more power at low speeds, and advancing will get you a little more at higher speeds... assuming no pinging occurs.
I'm sure all the guys that actually know what they're talking about are

Sort of. For all out WOT performance yes for the most part. Keep in mind that moving the base timing will affect all of your daily driving too. Thats why its best to program the timing in the computer, but for WOT performance only using base timing is ok by me.
