L98 Conversion to Single Mass F/W
As you know, the 84-88 cars had single mass flywheels. As mine is an '89, it has the dual mass, like the 89-96 cars.
For a few reasons, being that they are very heavy, they typically induce the very vibrations and chatter they were designed to prevent, and the two masses shift over time actually causing vibration, I want to ditch the dual mass.
What parts are needed to go single mass? From what I have heard, the C4 production early single mass will not work. It was for the 4+3 and does not have the right dimensions. I know the pressure plate for the ZF has the same bolt pattern as a BW T56 pressure plate. I am not sure if I can use the BW flywheel or not. These should all be the same amount of off-balance, so as long as I find a flywheel with the same dimensions (in other words from the back of the crank face to the clutch disc) I should be fine. I will change to a different combination of clutch disc and pressure plate also if needed.
Thanks guys! Could really use the help!
the 3 Options I know of are:
- Aluminum Flywheel
- F-Body LT1 flywheel milled .090" (think that is correct)
- 88 4+3 Flywheel with the longer Fork pivot ( TPiS Sells this)
Then you can use your stock Pressure plate and a F-Body LT-1 sprung hub disc.
On my 89 I am using the following:
-Fidanza Aluminum Flywheel
-Stock Pressure Plate
-Stage 1 Spec Clutch Disc
the set-up I just replaced was the Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch and Centerforce 34lb. Steel Single Mass Flywheel
I am pretty interested in prices and sources for these parts. It looks like TPiS wants $250 for the new clutch plate and the pivot.
I looked at the Fidanza and they wanted $350 or something for that. Very nice peice, but a little expensive. I can get a flywheel from parts direct for $190 and that's for part number 14088646. That's the lightweight (16 lb) 86 and up flywheel for one peice rear seal. Is that the right part? So if I were to order that part, and get the TPiS pivot and then find an LT-1 F-car clutch disc, I'd be set, right?
What can I do to the surface of the stock pressure plate for use on a new clutch disc? Light sand paper?
Really appreciate the help man.
Did you try a search for flywheel on the forum? there is a lot of info.
