I am doing the conversion from dualmass to Camaro flywheel. Have had the recommended 90 thousanths removed from flywheel, and had it magged for cracks, and balance matched to the old flywheel. I know that several people have done this mod, but getting cold feet as to the integrity of the flywheel with that much material removed. First, anyone had one of these flywheels fail in a high HP/RPM application after this mod? Second, I have not been able to find anyone that offers a scattershield for the ZF setup. Does anyone know of one, or if not, any other suggestions? I thought I read of someone here using an automatic transmission blanket? This engine sees 7,000 rpm on a regular basis, and I've grown rather attached to my feet.
I've dumped at 4000RPM and 4500 RPM launch w/ no prob. I have an RCI safety blanket around the bellhousing.
oh, yeah, no one makes a scattershield for the ZF.
no answers, but i do have a question. do you know how your 396 rotating assembly was balanced using the stock flywheel? i'm just wondering if the relative movement of the 2 halves complicates things.
Michael, the rotating assy was balanced w/the flywheel and balancer attached. The balancer is zero balanced from the factory, but the dualmass does have a counterweight. If your dualmass is ok, there are springs that hold the center mass in place. If you can turn the center portion of the flywheel by hand, those springs are broken, and the flywheel is junk.
Thanks guys for your replies. Spoke w/Doug Rippy and MTI today, and both have done a bunch of these conversions. They have never had the flywheel come apart either.
Having a personal, working relationship with Mr Murphy and his law, I did order a trans blanket from RCI. If anyone else is interested in doing this, their std blanket as sold by Summit is 48X12. The outside measurement of our bellhousing is 48", so it should fit perfectly. Way better than nothing...
Tranny safety blanket. Yes, the blanket is that one. I thought I had pics on my hard drive, but can't find them. But basically, when you're under there, bolt the the clutch assembly up and the bellhousing too. At this point, the c-beam is not on and the motor is tilted at an angle. Now put the blanket into place over the bh but not sinched up. Fish the 2 blanket anchor straps up passed the firewall, over the valve covers. Now you can raise the motor back up to level and install tranny body and c-beam. The blanket will be wrapped slightly off center so that the buckles can be accessed and sinched up from underneath. I did not wrap the slave or hyd line under the blanket.
btw, my camaro fw belonged to Chris Vette92 who posted above. So that's 2 Vettes that used this fw w/ no probs.
Thanks for the info, Paul. Looks like our best option. Ispoke w/John @ RCI, and he would have made a custom one, but after taking the measurements, looks like the std will fit perfectly.
Going on four years with the same Camaro flywheel. No problems. Been cleaned up a couple of times with the new clutches. Bought the trans blanket from ASM. They have a picture on their website. $190.00
