I checked the belt....it's buckled... :D just kidding,
The belt looks new and the tension on it seems right, this car has that kit that does away with the air pump and just has an idler pulley where the air pump was... it ( the compressor) only rattles when you switch the AC on, so I was fearing the whole compressor is shot, I called pep boys who want 169.99 for a rebuilt clutch and compressor, of course the local "AC shop" want 800.00 for a compressor
Either way I'll have a shop where I know the guy collect the freon, I assume it's a freon system I didn't stay out there too long today but damned if I saw the fill valves.....then I'll put a new compressor on and have him put the freon back in or maybe convert to the new stuff I hear it doesn't cool as well...., it did good in my ex girl fiends broom, eh, car....
Thanks, charlie.... :jester :flag
Could be the tensioner or could be the wrong size belt, particularly if you ditched the air pump; or it could be the a/c clutch or the compressor (I doubt it's the pulley bearing as it would be noisy whether loaded or unloaded). Is it blowing cold & cycling? Is there a burning or heat odor coming from the a/c clutch? If it's cold and there's no odor, determine if there's any discernable play in the compressor clutch by removing the belt and using a feeler gauge between the outer hub and the pulley. There should .020 clearance completely around with the a/c off. The pulley shouldn't wobble either. If it checks out ok, I'd play around with the belt first, the tensioner second, and make sure the tensioner is within it's operating range Also, you can always just replace the a/c clutch and it won't need to be discharged if you do so.
The air blows ice cold, no burning smells....I am new to the c4 thing , I just learned it had the air pump removed, according to the ad in mid america for the kit used to remove the air pump you use the stock belt, I will check the rest of what you suggested tomorrow, and take a good look at the belt and tensioner, I woul;d far rather just replace the clutch....it just made me think since it only did it with the AC on it must be the compressor itself....but I guess the AC on puts drag on everything...
Thanks,
