EGR Pipe
I've got an 87 convertible. Yesterday I changed the valve cover gaskets and did a few other minor things. I had to remove the EGR pipe, replace its gaskets and protective covering. Can anyone tell me what the sensor is that comes off the EGR pipe? I'm curious what it does. I noticed the probe on the sensor is threaded and can be screwed into its housing on the pipe. Thanks for the help!!

Yeah, it's the EGR temp sensor and if you're not setting a code 32, it's still good.
Want to clean up that ugly area? Take the pipe off and throw away that ugly, burnt, ripped up asbestos-looking silver eye-sore. If you have a bunch of bolts around from other vette projects, there's a certain size bolt with a flanged head that just fits down into the hole that the EGR pipe bolts to on the exhaust manifold side. This effective blocks the heat from coming up the pipe. Mask the sensor, sand then paint the pipe with Krylon Semi-Flat black paint. After it drys, reinstall the pipe. Paint the torque-head bolts while you're at it. With the heat blocked, the pipe will stay nice and nothing will burn. It won't set any codes either.
