This past weekend during an autox event I noticed that my oil temps were getting up in the upper 220s, I am running Mobil 1 5W-30 right now. Will running a differnt weight/viscosity be more resistant to heating up like that? If so what would you recommend, 10W-30 or I have seen 15W-50 although that seems pretty thick.
Mobil is good up to over 300, you dont have anything to worry about.
5w and 10w both end up as 30 weight when warm. Thinner oil will be better for racing.
Most oils reach their upper viscosity at 200*, and might thin out a little with higher temps say 260-280. I wouldn't get concerned until your oil is pushing 260 and only if it keeps going up. Mobil1 is the stuff
thanks for all the info, the only thing that got me kinda worried was the drop in oil pressure at idle when it was at those temps, it was going down in to the 20psi range at idle, as soon as I gave it a little gas it shot right back up
It will lubricate fine, you just may want to change oil more frequently than every 3k if you do alot of racing.
Our engines will be just fine for short racing like autox, its not like youre doing endurance racing. I would just keep an eye on oil pressure moreso than temperature, it needs to be high for high-rpms.
