When I was header shopping I decided on the LPE's because they looked like they were designed and researched, not just made to fit. They have nice tubing, etc.
I have never cared for Hooker or Heddman, we used them on our 65 mustang and werent impressed with either. TPiS lost all my business after dealing with them awhile ago. And as the others, their headers just dont seem like they were researched, just made to fit.
BTW I have some LPE 1-5/8" on my 87, they sound great too :D
I have the LPE 1"3/4 long tubes. The only problem area is number 8(plug). It's a bit difficult to get to...but no other complaints. Mine have been on the car since 1997.
Oh? And whats that idea?
Strip everything not relating to performance :P
JK... everybody always talks smack about the lack of AC/Heater... etc cleans it up nicely.. too bad I stopped caring enough to make the engine bay nice and clean looking.. hehe.
I am also running the LPE 1 3/4 headers. They use 14 guage tubing, and have thick 3/8" flanges. They are a quality header. What ever headers you use, I would recommend having them ceramic coated, if they don't come that way.
I had them re-done twice. I tried Jet Hot first, then went to HPC that is on there now.
My tune was a little off during the time so that helps(if it's too rich or lean it supposedly overheats the coating) but the coating does not stay bright silver for long.
I bought my valve covers from -=Jeff=- from the forum here.
New LPE headers are stainless steel and made by Stainless Works for them. They are not coated but I guess they could be. According to the Web site, they claim no additional under hood heat front the stainless versus the coated headers :skep: I did think a long time about buying these, but went with the hookers instead.
Several people have steered me away from the stainless on a street car because the 304 stainless has a tentency to fatique and crack.
How long since your headers were done by HPC? I just sent them stuff and curious to hear how yours is holding up.
My headers went back in(re-coated) in 1998. They're a little rusty on the collector area...but I also drive the car in all weather conditions(It's seen snow several times and that doesn't help the coating)
Stainless steel is fine on a street car. I had stainless shorties on my mustang gt for a few years. Never had a problem. You don't need to coat a stainless header due to it's high resistance to corrison. A coated header comes close...but stainless is better IMHO.
Yeah most of the newer cars have stainless exhaust system components, but thats the 409 grade which will actually rust but is less prone to cracking. The 304 stainless they're using will stay looking like chrome but the has less strength.
What eventually swayed me was the under hood temps have got to be better with a coated system than with bare stainless. Getting the LPEs coated was getting into crazy money for a set of headers.
Speaking of snow, how'd you like the spring greeting Monday :U
