[Removable top designs] Difference between years?

I just was wondering. I got a new top, and it doesn't seem like it really wants to go in.

It looks about a 1/4 inch too short in design, and the top screw holes are too far forward. I once thought I heard about there being two designs for the tops. One for the early year cars, one for the later.

Is this true, and if it is, what are the differences in dimensions?

I believe there were actually 3 designs. 84-86E, 86L-88?, and the later top.

There is a kit you can buy to make them fit. But i cant find the site.

There are 3 designs for the tops.

84-86E
86L-88
89-96

The front mounting plates and bolts are differently spaced. You can buy a kit to retrofit an 84-88 car to fit an 89-96 top.
