I unhooked the timing wire(ESM?) near the booster and set the timing to 6 degrees BTDC. While still running, and the wire still unkooked, i gave it a little gas and it wanted to choke. It was like it had to "catch up" with its self.
I plugged the wire back and restarted it and the timing went way up to 10-15 degrees or so(off the scale) BTDC. Now the engine does not cut out at part throttle....it runs like it is supposed to.
My question...I have been having problems when I try to drive it as it surges and feels like it is not getting enough gas. Could something be causing it to drop the timing back down to 6 degrees where it does not run right?
I was also told that I may have jumped a tooth on the timing chain...if that is so, what would be the symptoms or is there an easy way to tell?
Thanks in advance!
Re: [UPDATE II] Possible Timing Problem.... (Bruthish)
First unplug the esm wire that is near the brake booster. there are two plugs near the booster. you want the one that is thin and I believe the wire that runs from there is black and tan.hook up the timing light to the number one plug be sure the connection has no way to ground out if it does then you will have a miss and unable to set the timing. put a chalk mark on the balancer where the indinted line is. loosen the distributer a little so it can be turned but is not loose enought to turn as the car engine is stated. start the engine check the timing. turn the distributer until the chalk mark is at 6 degrees.turn the engine off, tighten the distruburer down replace the spark wire plug the esm .when you restart the engine it should start easy it there is any backfire or hesitation in starting then it may have jumped timing. I believe .when the timing is corrrect the number one plug wire should be at about the 11 oclock if you were setting inside the car. I believe if it did jump timing it should be the other way near the 0 degree mark not absulutely sure. hope this helps ,maybe someone else can also help. :chevy :auto:

Looking at the alignment of the distributor, it look slike it is right on. It seems though that something electrical is causing the ESM to malfunction or lose connection. On another note: I found a cracked vacuum line that goes from the front of the plenum to the canister next to the Drivers side headlight. I fixed it....but I haven't been able to drive it yet.
