My gear shifter magically started to rise yesterday out of the blue when under power, so I checked the archives for ideas. Sure enough, one bolt was very loose on the support beam that runs along the drive shaft. Problem is I think it is stripped since it will not fully tighten (just keeps turning). Does anyone know if I can safely screw in a larger bolt or is there anotherway to properly fix. I took it for a short test ride and the shifter rising stopped, but it will soon start moving. All insight is appreciated.

You should be able to get that bolt out and take it to a good hardware store and get a new one. Use the machine or nylock locking nuts so they don't come loose. Machine locking are better than nylock but harder to find I think.
I did not know they had nuts on the other side since they would be near impossible to reach. Would it not just be threaded steel the bolt screws into? If there is a nut, then this may be the answer to my problem.

I just fixed that problem on my Vette. The nuts on the top are accesible. So you don't have this grief again order the support plates from http://www.zfdoc.com/c4beamplate.htm The price may seem a little steep at first until you have to try and tighten thoes bolts. First class hardware. If you have any questions you may call me at my home number between 6 and 10 PM East coast time. 724 941 3792
Thanks alot "The Bus", I will try to fix this on the weekend now that I know there are bolts atop the carrier, but I may have to bite the bullett.
