Re: Pulling the cam - how to raise the engine? (Sliding)
You just need to undo the right(pass) side motor mount, loosen the C Beam on back of trans, and put a block of wood on floor jack and carefully jack up the oil pan. Or you can use a engine hoist at that point to lift engine from above.
Re: Pulling the cam - how to raise the engine? (tpi 421 vette)
I did mine without even loosening the tranny c-beam. I just unbolted the two motor mounts, and jacked her up. One word of caution- if you are doing this on an LT1, you cannot easily do this by jacking up from the oil pan, as you have to remove the oil pan to get the timing cover off, and have to hoist the engine to get the oil pan off. If you can get an engine hoist, it makes the job much easier (so you can lift it from the top).
Re: Pulling the cam - how to raise the engine? (MarkLT1)
Hi, just curious but why do you need to lift the engine just to do a cam swap? i put a hotcam in a 90 and it was easy, no need to lift the engine, just loosen front half of the oil pan bolts to be able to get the timing cover off? jst a thought goodluck
Re: Pulling the cam - how to raise the engine? (Sliding)
There is a way to cut part of the timing cover away.Once its off the engine of course. So I suspect your engine was rebuilt & someone did this to it.
Its the inner ridge of the front oil seal.If you cut that off you can replace the cover without loosening the oil pan.
I dont see any way possible a guy can lower the front of an oil pan by only loosening the front few bolts. You have to loosen all of them & remove most of them. Then when putting it back together you run the risk of haveing caused a oil leak.
Re: Pulling the cam - how to raise the engine? (nobodyunknown)
I did the same as everybody else, used a block of wood on the jack to distribute the wieght across the oil pan cover. then used short 2x4s on the motor mounts to support it while I worked....
Re: Pulling the cam - how to raise the engine? (Sliding)
I just removed the torque arm and let the engine tilt back enough to get it out. Granted I already had my exhaust off for some other reason so that was no big deal.

No, that inner ridge is on the cover but I got it off anyway.
I guess I was just lucky.
