If you're refering to the boot on an '88 A4 shifter:
-remove the left IP face plate
-remove the center IP face plate
-remove the center console screws
-carefully pry up the button from the shifter ****
-use C-ring plyers to remove the C-clip within the shifter know
-lift the shifter **** up off the shifter lever
-slide the shifter console cover plate up over the shifter rod
-turn the console cover plate over and remove the 4 screws holding the boot
Use the reverse to install the new boot, being careful to align the shifter position pointer with the prong on the side of the shifter lever.
Pop out the button; unscrew the "T" rod; pry out the wedge; unscrew the ****; lift off the Reverse doughnut & rod. That "T" rod will unscrew a lot (like 3/4"); you may want to make a tool out of brake tubing (slot the end).
Watch out for the Nylon block on top of the switch; mine was not pinned, and it falls off when rod is removed.
Biggest pain is undoing the whole console + radio/AC facade + dashboard fascia.
I got some leather conditioner from my local shoe repair shop; the boot is nice & soft now... :D

Re: Shifter boot replacement (Rich B.)
That wedge can be a real pain to pry out. Just be gentle when you tap it back in afterwards.. someone else will need to yank it out too, and it might be you.
I'm assuming by your talk of the OD switch, that you have a 4+3. In that case, Rich B is your man.

Re: Shifter boot replacement (dano7vette)
When you unscrew the T rod be sure to count the number of turns. You wnat to put it back in the same number of turns. Being off by 1 or 2 isn't a big deal, but too much mor than that and the top button will sit too high or too low compared to it's original setting. Again not a huge deal, but it just won't "feel" right. It may make thumb shifting less responsive too.
