I have a 1989 Convertible that I bought last September. I have noticed when driving at night that sometimes the Digital Dash is bright and very easy to read. Then it will change and be dim but not to the point of being a problem, just not as bright.
Could this be a bad ground or signs of bad things to come. I have heard many things about this dash but I am not sure where to begin looking.
Bulbs can be on their way out, light sensor possible but i dont think thats it, or the connections inside need to be resoldered. http://www.batee.com/corvette/dcrg/
When driving at night, the dash will go to dim when the cockpit is dark and if you go under a street light, it will brighten, so if you drive from an area well lit into good darknesss, the dash will dim down, like when you leave city lights and drive out into the country.
jfb had the same thought that I was going to mention. Every time I drove under a street light my dash would go to full intensity. Thinks its daytime and wants to put out as much light so you can read it.
Put some black tape over the sensor and see if it stays full bright all the time. This will rule out bad solder joints and bad grounds. Of course the bad joints and grounds could be in the sensor circuit.
I'd give this a try anyway as a troubleshooting test.
Putting black tape over it will make it dim,not bright.
I thought the eye was overridden by turning on the lights.
Try wiggling the headlight switch **** when it acts up.
