I'm swapping into an 87 with stock aluminum heads and an LPE 74211 with LPE springs, retainers, and locks. Do I need self-aligning rockers even though I'm using hardened guide plates???
Also, I'm stuck between an MSD 6a and a Crane Hi-6... any opinions??
Thanks!!!
Re: Do I need self-aligning rockers??? (Mark85Vett)
Since you are using guide plates you dont have to use self-aligning rockers, the guide plates will guide the rockers.
I have allways like the MSD stuff but it looks like Crane is comming out with a lot of good stuff.
Re: Do I need self-aligning rockers??? (Mark85Vett)
Use either self-aligning RRs OR non self-aligning with hardened guide plates & hardend push rods...do NOT use both as the two configurations can work against each other.
What you do(n't) need for each.
Not-Self Aligning: Hardened pushrods & guideplates.
Almost every GM cast iron head setup rolled off the floor without guideplates. They used non-self aligning rocker arms. CI heads used the slot in the head to locate the pushrod. Some setups are slightly different--sometimes there was a pushrod slot and then again on some heads (i.e. 882...GM had different versions of 882s, one slotted and one with just a hole) just had a hole.

Well the #113 casting in '88 and later L98s has the wide slots, non-functional guide plates (used during factory assembly only) and self-aligning rockers.
When I installed the ProMagnum RRs I went with hardened guide plates and pushrods since I upgraded to 7/16" studs and the RRs didn't come in self-aligning for those studs a few years ago.
