Hey Guys.... My car when its cold is super fast. I dont drive it when its cold though... I like to get it a little warm before taking off... I dont let it sit fot 15 minutes but... I have it running for 5 mintures or so before I leave.
After driving for awhile and the temp gets up, The car is noticably (MUCH) slower and doesnt have the throttle responce or pep it has when its cool. When its cool, the car is a rocket ship
I have the stock 195 stat. in it. I guess I should change that to a 160 and do a fan switch. Is this the only thing I could do. Im going to add a bottle of water wetter, The coolant is new with about 40% water or so. Not distilled (make a big difference)
Re: Slows down when warm... Heat soak (StealDads67)
This may be insignificant, but have you thought about a TB bypass? It does stop the TB from heating the air going into the engine. Just a thought.
Re: Slows down when warm... Heat soak (StealDads67)
My LT1 used to exhibit the same thing, not a major throttle response drop but enough that I could notice it didn't feel as "spritely" at temp as when warming up. I removed the stock 180 thermostat (LT1's have 180's as stock) and dropped in a 160 (Hypertech brand made by Motorad). I then did the throttle body coolant bypass at the same time while I had things apart. I used my Hypertech programmer to set the fans to activate sooner in accordance with the colder tstat. It all seemed to help reduce the loss of throttle response situation.
Now, you have an L98, which presents a few different issues. First off your stock stat is 195. Do they make a 180 stat for L98? If so, I'd try that first before trying a 160 stat. A 160 stat would represent a 35 degree drop from stock and that seems a little excessive. Maybe try a 180 stat and do the tb coolant bypass at the same time. But you still need to turn the fans on at around 190 or so, and I'm not sure how to do that on an L98 except with a manual fan switch setup that you could toggle on and off from the dash or shift console.
The L98 loooooves to be cold. The LT1s like a little more temperature than they do. I have a 160* thermostat in my car and typically driving around in the summer it is 185* and has plenty of power left. In the winter when the streets are cold and the car takes 15 minutes to get above 150* its insane. :)
p.s.
Someone once said that for every degree over 150 in an L98 you lose 0.1% of your power. I don't know how much truth is in it.
Ok... Cool... Ill do the Stat and fan switch. I did the TB by-pass and I dont know if It helped, havent really jumped on it since, and the day I did it it got up to 80*.
Thats next on the list.... gotta love the cheap mods, haha.... Thanks all
EDIT. You guys suggest to go to a 180 or 160? ... Ill probably end up doing a 160 and swap back in a 180 for winter or something.

I´ve read the same, that you get 1% increase in horsepower for each 10 degrees you lower the temperature of the incoming air. If you have a cold motor, the air that reach the cylinders is very cold compared to a warm engine. If the 1% formula is true, then you´ll have an extra 15-17% extra horsepowers when the engine is cold. That really makes a difference. :D
