That's right, my ABS has lost it's mind:crazy: Only when I'm at a dead stop I can feel the brake pedal pulsate and hear the ABS unit going off. It happens sporatically and only when my car is at a stand still. Anyone have similar experiences???
I had this once before and it was a bad wheel sensor.Seems over time they get filthy too and need some cleaning.Mine had so much grime it was running blind, but it also corroded itself into the aluminum.Btw I dont think you can use a scan tool to see the abs function,I cant with my snap on scanner,I think that works on later cars only.
Btw,you can simply pull the ABS fuse out of the fuse panel and deactivate the abs until you get it fixed. That way,no more annoying self testing at every dead stop it does when the sensor(s) go bad.Just make sure you drive safely and remember you wont have ABS on in case you need it.
To answer that question You have to have a Scan Tool that will read the ABS like the GM Tech 1. More then likely like Bill said it's a bad sensor that's going crazy I have fixed a few cars like that at the Dealership. You need the scan tool and have to drive with it hooked up and watch all four wheel speeds to see if one or more is way off from the others. Like Bill said I would pull the fuse to for now.
I replied earlier but got disconnected so hope this reply stays....basically,I found the problem by accident.I was planning to get the sensors checked but that day I was doing suspension work and noticed the back sensor was corroding and covered with grime. While the sensors usually have one bolt you have to remove then pull the sensor our, mine had seized into the knuckle. It had that white oxide corrosion common on these alloy suspension peices.
SO I had to destroy the sensor getting it out,but had an idea this was THE One that was bad. After I replaced it,my ABS worked great.Mainly, the ABS sensors can get very dirty and covered in grime, and if say a wheel bearing is going bad and slinging grease everywhere in there,or corrosion occurs between the knuckle and sensor,it can render it dead.
I did also hear that one can use a voltmeter at home to measure the sensors to check for a bad one,but I cannot rem. for sure. You may need to do what John said and have it checked at a dealer if you cant find the bad one at home.Mainly, try and see if you can take each off its mounting place and clean the corrosion and grime off it.Apply a small bit of anti seize to the sensor housing, not the tip of it and it will prevent it from oxiding into the suspension parts.
Aluminum has its own form of rust I get, that white powdery stuff from rbeak down tends to be a problem for these cars.
Good Luck.
:)
Go behind the drives seat in the compartment and take the tray out and lift out the stuff under the tray and just go to the main conector on the ABS pump and dissconnect it.
