Default New user says hello, plus a header question

Hello all -
Technically I'm a new user, but I have been reading posts for about a year now. There is so much useful information on this site that it has saved me a great deal of agony (and money) many a time. Anyway, I thought I'd go ahead and join and maybe impart some of the knowledge I've accumulated over the past couple of years, too. But first, a question of my own...
I am looking into buying a set of longtube headers. Right now, it will probably be the Hooker 2151-1s. My question is, can you weld the O2 bungs into the collectors with the ceramic coating already applied, or do you have to order an uncoated set, weld the bungs, then apply the coating? If that is the case, why does Hooker even sell coated headers to begin with?

You can weld them in, but you will have to drill through the coating and it is tough stuff!:)

I have coated TPIS headers myself, but from what I have read here previously you have to buy uncoated headers weld the bungs then send them out to be coated. I did not want to mess with all that plus Hookers are an L98 header that you have to slightly modify to fit an LT1. My guess on why Hooker sells coated headers w/o the bung is some people use them in their race setups. Check out the cost savings after you buy uncoated headers, weld O2 bungs, pay shipping 2-3 times, and coating how much are you saving to buy an L98 header? My $.02 is check out TPIS or some like the new Exotic Muscle LT1 headers. I like saving $ too but headers are not the place to sacrifice quality. Sorry, you did not state what engine you have. I assumed LT1. :bb

Yep, LT1. I looked on the TPIS website and did not see an O2 bung pre-welded into their collectors. Is it in one of the primaries?
The reason I was looking at buying the 2151-1s was because of the good reviews they got here. I will be removing AIR, and my EGR system is confined to the intake manifold, so no need for extra tubes on the headers. Plus, I have a 6-spd, so there should be plenty of room underneath.
I sent an email to Hooker product support, but they have been slow to respond

The O2 bung on the TPIS headers is on the outside of the collectors. On the TPIS web site you want to look at C4 headers for LT1/4. They state for race only, but come equiped with all the O2 bungs and air hook-ups.

If you have a welder you have an angle grinder, I just ground the ceramic off and welded the bung in. Do place the bung as far forward as you can on the top surface of the collector though, or you will need to drop the header if you ever need to remove the sensor. Guess how I know this! :nopity

You can order the uncoated headers if you want, and then send them off for coating.

Welcome aboard Hammer.
I can't understand why Summit/Hooker sells the 2151-1 more expensively than the 2149'2 when the 49's have more labor and parts into them?
I got some 2149's, cut off the AIR tube and EGR tube stuff and welded closed the openings. The ceramic wasn't too bad. Won't be entering any beauty contest/car shows but alot cheaper than 2151-1's
btw, my heated O2 is in a collector/reducer after the headers' collector on the passenger side where there is more room for us 6 speed guys.

Thanks for the welcome guys
This is all good info. I guess I'll just talk to the exhaust shop and see if they have ever done any welding on coated headers. I just hate to go through all the trouble of having headers shipped to me, only to have to turn right around and ship them off again to get coated.
And I don't understand the price discrepancy between the 2149 and 2151 either. Seems like there's more stuff on the 2149, but who knows.

So, you guys with headers, did you just drive with open headers to the exhaust shop, or did you figure out a way to rig something with the exhaust system to get you there? Knowing my luck, I'll get pulled over not more than a mile from my house with open headers.
