87 MAF / Speed Density question?
My sister has an 87 vette and the service engine light intermittently comes on and it reads bad MAF, I tried cleaning the contacts and what not and still does this.
I have been looking on e-bay for a new or used MAF and have a few questions...
1. Will any MAF from any 85-89 TPI work? - Camaro, Iroc, Firebird?
2. I see people are selling Speed Density ECM's, what is involved, can i just plug in the new ecm and off with the MAF??? no other parts needed??
Thanks!
John

The speed density L98 cars ('90-'91) use a different wiring harness as well as the ECM. Too much trouble to convert just for casual maintenance.

Replace the two relays behind the battery on the firewall, together it shouldnt be but $20. Disconnect the battery and see if the codes come back.
If they come back, replace the MAF sensor. Any 85-89 MAF should work, as to whether the F-body will work, i dont know.
Replacing the ECM will end up costing more, youd do away with MAF but you still have to buy a MAP sensor and fabricate a new intake to fit in place of where the MAF would go.
I dont know the exact code as it has been quite a while since we read it.
A "new" maf is like 200, where the ecm's are going for like 70. I wasnt sure what a map sensor is going to run me, and i am sure i could construct some type of intake to replace the maf....
Thanks for the reply's!
