You can simply gut the main cat. Check into the inspection reqmts of your state to be sure that all you have to do is pass a visual inspection. Your 1985 might be old enough to qualify.
My cat is already gutted, but doing so caused me some problems trying to pass the emissions tests. I was hoping that a new free flow cat would help me get past that problem.
I am using the new Random Tech (RT) Metalic cats. RT claims they flow even better than their older version (approx. 120cfm if I remember correctly). They are small and much lighter than OEM cats. Yes they are proud of them, but don't buy direct from RT. Find a major distributer like East Coast Supercharging, who is getting them at a better price than RT sells direct. Good luck. :chevy
You can get a hood hi-flow cat from MAD or even Summit but I whated to be sure it was very good so I have a Random Tech. I got it through TPIS for around $225.
In full race dress my L98 easily passed the OH dreaded E-check dyno sniffer test this last Feb.
