Steering morning sickness?
when I first start out with a cold engine my steering seems to have tight or sticky dead spots it seems to get better as things warm up I noticed in a corvette parts catalog that vette people call this morning sickiness and they will sell you a new rack&pinion to fix it....
But what is really going on and what is really worn out?
Thanks....

Its usually some leaks inside the rack, from the old materials used, and the fluid eventually eats little holes in that material. Either that or the PS pump is wearing down.
Plus, nobody ever changes the PS fluid unless you tell them to, so the fluid stays in there forever.
If you put in new fluid, itll likely decrease or go away altogether. But the only permanent fixes are PS pump and/or rack. Its near impossible to tell which one is the cause, but id bet its usually the rack.
Mine does it too, I just put in new Synthetic fluid and it decreased a good bit.

Sounds good...change out the fluid, I'll put that on my "to do" list,
I would like to put off on changing the rack as long as I can....
Cheers,

Buy Lucas power steering leak stopper. I guarantee that will rid your "morning sickness". It did for me.

:iagree: with what's been said, especially synthetic fluid.
I had beginnings of symptoms several years ago, drained all the old fluid and installed Amsoil syntheteic ATF fluid, no problems, 25,000 miles later :D

In the old days "leak stoppers" use to scare me I thought it would do more harm than good....then I dumped a bunch in the 5.0 I was driving and it fixed what I considered a fairly bad PS leak, I really was shocked...I will give the lucus stuff a try....

Re: Steering morning sickness? (The13Bats)
Mine had the "morning sickness" last year when I bought it. Over the course of the last year I have made it a point to suck out the fluid from the reservoir with a turkey baster, and replace with the valvonline synthetic. This doesn't get all the fluid, but a decent portion. All in all, I've changed the fluid about 6 times. No more morning sickness since January :hurray: Though the fluid still becomes dark gray very quickly. I'm going to keep flushing every month until the fluid stays clear for awhile.

I did my engine a few years ago and drained out the PS fluid and found a bunch of stuff in the fluid. I put in new fluid and had to drain the system again after two days and found more debris in the fluid. Morining sickness was coming on before the engine change but I have not seen it since then.
Try flusing the system completely. The morning sickeness may go away once the stuff is out of the system.

Re: Steering morning sickness? (tworottiedogs)
About three months ago, I decided to put a power steering fluid filter in the return line of all three of my vehicles -- it's amazing how clean the fluid remains after doing this. I think this will eliminate the morning sickness.
I used an in-line auto transmission filter that fits a Honda for my power steering filters -- I fugure it is good for about 20K miles before changing.
