Mine shifts very smooth in all gears weather car is running or not. My wife drove my car for the first time today( I was w/ her) and she even commented how smooth it shifted. By the way how did you bust your hose? Did you do something or did it just burst on ot's own? Good Luck, Guy
A 91 is 12 years old.......when was the last time you changed out the fluid? My girls car was a 99 camaro with a hurst and it had 1st to 2nd gear grinding, believe it or not a simple fluid change was all it took to correct it. I would suspect that this would be a simple approach, if it doesn't work, then something bigger may be at hand, but start off with the simple stuff and work your way up. Either way no harm will be done, moving parts always dig fresh fluids anyway.......

That camaro has a T-56 and your vette has a ZF-6. Its a very different tranny.
All lubricants break down after a period of shearing. Regardless of the recommended interval, you should change your ZF (use factory fill) once a season (or more) if used competitively, and every 20,000 miles. It is very cheap insurance on a very expensive gearbox that's next to impossible to find a qualified shop closer than 1,000 miles. (Like ZF Doc)
In my opinion, what kind of car is irrelevent. Most people over look the most basic elements, in this case, a fluid change. Her car was only 3 years old when it started (1st to second grinding) to happen with low miles.....like 15k....changed fluid and presto problem solved (the car was not abused). Why spend $1500 on a rebuild when maybe something as simple as a fluid change might cure the problem? I changed my fluids yearly whether it needs it or not! Oil every 3k. He has NO idea how that car was driven before he got it. Could have lived at 5k RPMs most of it's life.....who's to know.....fluids don't stand a chance under "possible" abuse, so I threw that out as a possibility....
Aaron is it your ZR1 that your having a problem with? When I got mine it had around 30k on it, and it felt a bit notchie going into 3rd. After changing the fluid it felt somewhat better, it feels just a bit smoother with engine off than running. I havn't really hammered the tranny to hard though. But it doesnt seem to be getting anyworse,it has only popped out of third one time and when I shifted and It did not feel right.
kabn, yeah its the ZR-1. A fluid change is in the plan, but I have not received the 17mm allen socket I ordered last week. I have the trans fluid ready to go.
The hose originally broke while driving home one night. There is a small clip that holds the hose just above the cat converter. It poped out of the clip and over time rubbed on the heat shield. It was enough to cut thru the steel line and cause a leak :(
I bent the stupid clutch pedal again, got another on order, I don't know if I keep getting weak pedals or if my leg is much stronger then I thought. New pedal is due in Thursday this week. I bench bleed the master and it seemed to fell real good, I did not put it on the car tho because I had to pull the pedal. Should be an interesting week. Of course this weekend was beautiful, I pulled the seats and did the carpet scrub thing. I am always doing something on the car. Plan on polishing the suspension and cleaning the wheels this week to stay busy until the new pedal comes in.
