Default 84 engine problems, and performance HELP!!!!!!

Yes I am the second owner of a well taken care of 1984 corvette. Recently I changed the oil, and while driving it the next day the right side of the engine starts knocking. The intake manifold also back fires NOT the exhaust, and the car will not pick up speed well at all. I was told it might be a bent push rod but I am not sure. Also if I deside to build my car up a little how much would this help a comp chip, flowmaster Force II cat back, throttle body switch? Also any other suggestions will help thanks

I've had my 84 for a year now, I;m tired of its performance, Im just going to go with a 85-91 TPI unit and get some new heads and then port the TPI out. Good luck with yours :yesnod: :steering:

Welcome to the forum. Now go away. No really, go here.
http://www.crossfire.webhop.net/

I'm just kidding about going away, of course. :jester CorvetteForum is an excellent source of info, but the crossfire forum specializes in 82 and 84 Vettes. Go to the crossfire forum, register, and post your problems there. The members there are experts on the L-83 motor, and are a great bunch of guys.

As for your problem, we need a little more info. Did you get a check engine light? How many miles are on the engine? Have you checked the timing? Did the problem come on suddenly? A sudden intake backfire can also be a sign of a bad ignition coil. Were you just crusing when the problem happened, or were you getting on it? Have you run a compression check? If you bent a push rod (which I find unlikely), you will get a funky compression reading on one cylinder. Start with timing and compression, and let's go from there.

Now for the buildup. Don't waste your money on the "throttle performance switch". All it does is fool the ECM into thinking the car is at full throttle when actually at 60%. Save the hundred bucks for real mods and just mash the accelerator to the floor. If you want to make more power with the crossfire, start by porting the intake, boring the throttle bodies, and putting on a freer flowing exhaust. The tech articles to do all this are on the Crossfire forum.

Good luck, run some tests, and let us know how they turn out.

"Real" Corvette owners, sometimes, like to make fun of us Crossfire guys. I have had a lot of fun playing with mine. I've cut 2 full seconds off it's 1/4 mile time, without spending a bundle, or even going onto the engine. Underneath the "funky" Crossfire system, sits a normal Chevy 350 engine. It responds to modifications just like any other SBC. Frizlefrac, pretty much nailed it with:

Read the forums, get some books (specially if this is your first injected engine) and study up on it. It really isn't as bad as some would have you believe. Good luck, and...

thanks for your reply, the engine light does not come on, I was not speeding at the time I was going about 15 then I press down hard for about 2 sec until i got to 25 then it started knocking. I have not checked the timing in it yet its at the shop now so i will find out any day whats wrong with it. Its kinda funny it happened all at once. This was the last thing I would have expected, I mean it has 130K but it only had one owner he babied it to hell. Its had syn. oil in it for 15 years and always had premium gas since new. So I never had any hints about any thing going wrong, but it happend the day after i changed the oil so i dunno.

Did you change to synthetic oils??????
I tried to use syn. on an early camaro..and got the knocking sound you are talking about.....I should have stuck with regular oil....messed up my engine and had to rebuild it (78K miles)....if engine was low..low miles, probably would have been ok!!!!!!!!!!
Just a thought.....
