84 engine problems, and performance HELP!!!!!!
http://www.crossfire.webhop.net/
I'm just kidding about going away, of course. :jester CorvetteForum is an excellent source of info, but the crossfire forum specializes in 82 and 84 Vettes. Go to the crossfire forum, register, and post your problems there. The members there are experts on the L-83 motor, and are a great bunch of guys.
As for your problem, we need a little more info. Did you get a check engine light? How many miles are on the engine? Have you checked the timing? Did the problem come on suddenly? A sudden intake backfire can also be a sign of a bad ignition coil. Were you just crusing when the problem happened, or were you getting on it? Have you run a compression check? If you bent a push rod (which I find unlikely), you will get a funky compression reading on one cylinder. Start with timing and compression, and let's go from there.
Now for the buildup. Don't waste your money on the "throttle performance switch". All it does is fool the ECM into thinking the car is at full throttle when actually at 60%. Save the hundred bucks for real mods and just mash the accelerator to the floor. If you want to make more power with the crossfire, start by porting the intake, boring the throttle bodies, and putting on a freer flowing exhaust. The tech articles to do all this are on the Crossfire forum.
Good luck, run some tests, and let us know how they turn out.
RACE ON!!!
I tried to use syn. on an early camaro..and got the knocking sound you are talking about.....I should have stuck with regular oil....messed up my engine and had to rebuild it (78K miles)....if engine was low..low miles, probably would have been ok!!!!!!!!!!
Just a thought.....
