The passenger side headlight on my 87 only goes down if you open the hood and tap the electric motor with a flashlight or something heavy. I have the headlight motor open right now and was wondering if anybody could tell me which contacts need to be cleaned in order to get it operating properly. Additionally, what should I use to clean them? Thanks in advance.

Re: Headlight Repair (Skydiver)
 Your question raises a myriad of other questions....Generally the problem with the headlights is not in the motor, but in the bushings inside the drive gear.
Is you motor (headlight) running when it won"t close...if it is it is likely the bushings.
If it isn't, unfortunately I can't help you, butt wait a few minutes. Someone is bound to come along who can :D
No, the motor does not seem to run after the headlight has lowered. I thought this was an odd problem also. Thanks for the insight, but I don't think it is the bushings.
Clean the brushes and their contact points, use fine sandpaper or steel wool and rinse with electrical component cleaner. You can find the cleaner at a parts store near the brake clean, carb. cleaner, etc.

This may well be the correct solution, but I just thought of something else ( I am electronically impaired, if it doesn't take a wrench, I can't fix it  )
But there are "stops" that sense the pressure when the light is fully opened or fully closed that shut the current off to the motor. Perhaps the "stop" is out of adjustment!
Sorry, now I have probably really confused you
JackDaRoofer, any idea where the stops are? I am electronically impaired also. There are alot of little brass or copper looking contact points in the motor.
Skydiver; if you still have questions send me an email. I took my motors apart so many times that I can now do it in a few minutes. This is an electrical problem common on pre 88 motors. After cleaning the brush contacts as suggested above and modifying mine to a 2 wire system the lights are now very reliable. :yesnod:
