Default Is there a difference between '86 and '88 ecms?

Anyone know? I bought a scanner/analyzer and it says it will work with '85 and '86 chevy 5.7 PFI v8's. Doesn't seem to display the correct data from my ecm. I'm trying to see if it will work on a friends '86.

Thanks

Also, we are confused about what PFI is. Anyone know? Are PFI/TPI/EFI the same thing?

What type of scanner are you using? I think they changed the ECM from the '86 P/N whenever they eliminated the cold-start injector, which I think was '89. You should be getting some data, though. Does the scanner need to be powered by 12V from the lighter and does the lighter socket work?

Also, every scanner I have seen specifically states " V8 TPI" when the vehicle information is entered.

86-89 used the exact same ECM. Other things changed, like the cold start injector, but those changes only required a change in the PROM, not the computer itself.

BUT... since the computer reads PROM information, it's possible that you can cause it to flake out by entering a year/model that doesn't match your PROM. In most cases this shouldn't represent a problem though.

I have two alltest scanners. One is from 1985, "alltest 3226 brainmaster" This one says it scans 85-86 5.7 v8 chevy PFI.

The other is a later model Alltest Allscan...1. It says it scans 81-92 vehicles. For my '88 under the applications chart where you program in the vehicle data to set the scanner... Asks for 8th vin# which is 8 in my case, that denotes 5.7v8, chevy/pontiac, and my choice for ecm is GMP4, then I differentiate from chevy/pontiac by turning a **** until it reads chevy v8. The applications charts make no mention of corvettes until you turn to the 1990 page.

Is the ecm for the corvette different from camaro/firebird? I thought the only difference between vette/camaro was the prom?
