I just went and had my Borla cat-back installed and after a year of muffler elims - it's a world of difference!!! I n the 5 blocks i drove back from the exhuast shop i could just feel the difference. throttle seems much more responsive and ready to go. the elims sounded great (maybe even better, I have yet to go WOT on the Borla) but they seriously affected my car's performance. Just a note to say how much of a difference there is...
now all i need are some new tips, those el-cheap-o sheet metal wrapped ones don't do it for me....

I have the Dyno sheets from my 89' that confirms your butt dyno feeling. I had elims for years, did a custom 3" catback with one Borla XR1, 4 hp and 18 lbs of tq more than the elims.

Re: Just put on my Borla cat-back (_freakmonkeydogboy_)
There was a guy with a basically stock 89 at an auto-x a few weeks ago out this way. Except he had straight pipe to the borlas. They sound so loud and evil and powerful! I was really impressed! The car was fast too!
Can you tell if they are "straight-thru" design?
Re: Just put on my Borla cat-back (89 Paul in Cal)
it's not a straight-thru design, i have the entire cat-back, so it has a center resonator, but i think i will replace that w/ an x-pipe. would an x-pipe affect my back-pressure any, because right now it's a great thing
Re: Just put on my Borla cat-back (_freakmonkeydogboy_)
Pics worked for me..
I wonder if I would gain back my little low-end loss if I changed form my 2 5/8 targa SS mufflers to a borla or so muffler design..I'm redoing my exhaust with headers and stuff soon anyways...
Re: Just put on my Borla cat-back (_freakmonkeydogboy_)
The resonator is straight-thru, don't know about the mufflers though. Most people think the resonator is a bottleneck in the system, but really it is not. Just two pipes surrounded by some kind of sound dampening material. Kind of like a glass pack. Therefore, the x-pipe probably won't change your backpressure, but it might make your exhaust more resonant, ie more annoying drone.
Incidentally, I had muffler elims for 6 months, and then went to a 2-chamber Flowmaster, and it was night and day as far as throttle response is concerned. Much more response off the line, and more instant oomph whenever you punched it from a slow roll. If the motor is basically stock, then it is designed to run with some backpressure. Now, a heads and cam change is something totally different.
The Borla mufflers are also of the "straight-thru" type, look in one end, see straight out the other. Just a perforated pipe surrounded by sound absorbent material.
I have to differ I have the Borla XR-1 cat back connected to TPIS Longtube Headers and R/T High flow cats and removed the Borla Muffs and added the elliminators and the car actually sounds better and has run faster times at Englishtown...not much faster but a bit faster it could also be less weight from the mufflers being removed and the stock cats also being removed for the lighter pertier Random Tech cats .
So basically me change from the design I have now :
Mid America Targa style Stainless Steel mufflers 2.5"
(They are like glasspacks in reality. 4 nice SS 2.5" straight pipes
with internal perforated pipes...)
To a borla like or flowmaster like mufflers won't do anything?
Guess I could save the money then..
:D
A lot the targa mufflers I have seen are necked down quite a bit just before the tips and are quite restrictive, I don't know if your MA targa are like that though.

Q. Is our product different from a 'glasspack' design?
A. Yes. A glass pack is a muffler usually containing a cheap grade of loose fiberglass insulation in a louvered tube. ...<snip>... BORLA mufflers, on the other hand, contain T-304 Stainless Steel perforated pipe wrapped with several layers of Stainless Steel sound absorbing material and a blanket of ceramic sound absorbing, high temperature material. ...<snip>
They are essentially glasspacks. When I had mine you could look right through them. Flowmasters are completely different though.
