have 85 vette dash goes haywire sometimes then light tap on display and it goes away for awhile.also the oil pressure reads o lbs but no red bar beside it but it registers oil temp. what are chances oil pressure is from dash. also i just had pressure switch replace a week earlier.thanks for responding. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
My '86 does the same thing. I have had my display apart and fixed one cold solder. That fixed one problem, but it still goes disco tech on me once in awhile.
Tapping on your cluster to regain its function shows an intermittent connection, on the cable connection or a solder joint on one or both circuit boards. Spray contact cleaner can be used on the connector and it might pay to unplug the boards from each other and replug them back to clean the single line of pins that connect the two boards together. You will need some low power magnification and inspect all of the solder joints for their quality and resolder those that don't look good. The pin closest the center of the circuit board carries the current to the 4 lamps and age relaxes the spring pressure on the socket this pin is in and causes so much heat that the pin usually unsolders itself causing intermittent lamp illumination. Don't bother resoldering the pin because it will shortly unsolder itself again. I soldered a short piece of insulated hookup wire from the pin to the socket and will never have to fix this problem again.
My intermitent problem on the dash started out like yours and eventually went permanetly off.
In my case it turned out to be the connector between the two boards.
The connector was in such bad shape that it could no longer make contact with the pins on the other board.
Being no longer usable i removed the connector and pins to solder wires from one board to the next.(Its been fine ever since)
Best just get the thing out and have a look.It aint too difficult. :)
Mine did that too. Had the cluster rebuilt. Works fine now. Be careful about tapping on the cluster. Those lenses are VERY fragile, and if you crack one, you're looking at about $125 to replace each one. (Gee, I wonder how I know that) You have a short in the cluster. It's cheaper just to get the thing rebuilt, than to find the short. Good luck.
