A couple of questions... On a stock L98 engine, what kind of performance numbers can I expect from porting/polishing my intake, including plenum, runners and intake base? Also will I then need to move up to a 52 or 58 mm TB? What will the addition of the new TB do? Thanks for the input.
expertly and fully porting the manifold base will result in 7-12 HP (see ligenfelter's website) Best cost effective thing to do is to chunk the whole thing. Moving to a 52mm TB will also imporve hp by a few. These mods really strive for/work for motor that have the "full package"-whatever that means to you.
Not worth the time and effort. Adding a 52mm TB is especially a waste. The base and runners are super restrictive. There's usually an intake setup floating around the "for sale" section that's not too outrageously priced.
58 mm TB? What will the addition of the new TB do?
on my 355, I switched from stock 48mm to a 58mm one day. With no other changes(both TPS set to .50v) I immediately lost smooth/soft throttle response. Since more air was travelling past the blades, higher revs and more power. Got old real quick.
Porting the plenum, base, and runners can significantly increase their potential - do you have the heads, cam, and exhaust to take advantage. If you are going to spend money on the porting, save it and buy a better intake setup when the car needs it.
I wont know what kind of gains the TPI porting gave me b/c I did many other mods at the same time. The only thing that would show on a dyno is how many more RPM I gained. In stock form, the HP died off just shy of 4400 rpm's. I might have gained 3 or 400 more RPM but I won't really know until I do some trans work and get it on a dyno and I won't be able to dyno for a while. :(
