Default rear caliper mounting bolts

The torque spec in the GM service manual for the rear caliper mounting bolt bracket is a whooping 166ft-lbs. I busted a bolt attempting this. although I reused the old bolt which is a no-no, but I didn't have a new one on hand.

Is that torque spec correct?
seems excessive ........ especially doing it on your back :boxing:
off to buy new bolts tomorrow.....

Here's what the GM (Red) Service manual says for my son's '92:

Page 5B2-6 Figure #7 - Item 2 - Mounting bolt (caliper bracket)

Specs listed at end of chapter:

Bracket Mounting Bolt - 95 N -m (70 lb. ft.)

Remember, these bolts once removed should not be reused. OEM bolts are coated with a "loctite" substance and so are the OEM replacements. I'm sure some folks may just clean, recoat and resue while others replace (like me) but I just want to let you know not to simply put the old ones back in.

Don't know what you're reading but I can't find anything in the brake section that requires 166 lb. ft. of torque!!

Sounds about what the torque spec is for your spindle nut!

70lbs works on the rear caliper bracket on a 87 also.

I double checked the 96 manual. The spindle nut is 166lbft. and then it tells you to look in the rear brake section for the caliper bracket bolts, and it also calls for 166lb-ft.

This is not something to play with, but I have my supisions that 166 may be an error.....

Hopefully someone with a 96 will chime in for you. What kind of manual do you have? I have seen some of the auto store editions give the correct inch pound figure but label it foot pounds

Torque it to 70 lb-ft. If you read the manual carefully you'll notice it says "torque front caliper bolts..." while the entire chapter is talking about the rear brakes. Clearly a cut-n-paste error...

>> "torque front caliper bolts..." <<

I did notice that. I just chalked it off to being the front side of the rotor.
actually 1 bolt took 125 lb-ft, while the other snapped at about 125 or so.

I just ordered 4 bolts locally. bastard got me for $6.50 each

70 ft. lbs is correct for the rears and 166 is for the front bolts. My 92 manual also specifies the front torque value as 166 ft lbs plus or minus 15 lbs.
