I use it to lube the cylinder walls in a brand new motor or in a motor that I'm setting aside and will be sitting for a while. It's a great lubricant that burns away almost immediately when the engine is fired so you don't have to worry about any fouling.
Doesnt sound like it lasts very long for whatever it does.
It actually lasts for a very long time as a lubricant as long as you don't expose it to combustion-like temperatures. Unlike conventional motor oils, it burns very thoroughly and relatively cleanly, making it a good preservative for stored or freshly built engines.
Its used fairly widely but also clandestinely in piston engine aviation. Although not officially FAA approved, plently of owners use it in both their fuel and their oil, mainly because the metallurgy used to manufacture a/c piston engines (Textron Lycoming, Teledyne Continental) is rather old fashioned, at least when compared to automotive engine metallurgy. ironically, AvBlend oil additive *is* FAA approved and is basically ZMax with blue dye in it instead of pink dye, and we all know what the FTC had to say about Zmax automotive oil additive don't we? (they basically revealed it to be mineral oil w/ pink dye in it)
I have a '94 Dodge Dakota p/u that is a garage queen royale. When i change the oil in it I put in a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil to help ward off corrosion inside the motor. But I would not use it in a daily driver or even a weekender, because its cling-to-the-metal-for-a-longtime protective anti-corrosion properties wouldn't be needed.
There are rumors that MMO is Automatic Transmission Fluid. I do not know if this is true or not but I have my doubts... someone probably noticed the same red color and viscosity to it as ATF and proclaimed it to be nothing but ATF in a fancy bottle
I like to use marvel mystery oil in my race bike. I mix it with the 110 race fuel because it seems to help the valve seats from rusting in between races(Sometimes weeks at a time). The 110 is very "coarse", (it dries things out) and the Marvel mystery oil seems to make it a little more gentle on contact. Also I beleive it slightly helps with ring seal keeping the compression up as it cycles through the combustion process.
As a side note, my buddies I race with have had to top end their bikes twice in the last two years, and mine has stayed consistant with no drop in performance (et or mph) in the last three years.
Leakdown has gone from 3 percent to 12 percent, but performance remains, which is good cause now i spend all my time f n with the vette!
Old timers swear by this stuff and I have used it some in my past hot rod days. Seems to help, like STP and the rest, but can't say for sure if it really improves lubrication. It does seem to prevent rust. Sid.
I'm guessing that kerosene is a major component of MMO. I've seen (heard) it unstick a frozen lifter in minutes. Anyway, my autoshop teacher in high-school used to rave about the stuff, and I've used it in all my carburated cars. I haven't used it in any of my fuel injected cars, and won't, until I can verify that it's compatible with the injectors.
I used it 20 years ago in a 350 chevy I had in a truck that had a ticking lifter. Every oil change the tick would come back like clockwork. Added the marvel mystery oil and it went away in a few minutes, never to appear again till the next oil change. Did that for a number of years.
I wouldn't use it in any current engine as an additive though. It just seems like glorified kerosene to me.
I use Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas of any engine I like a lot.
I run it in ALL my Vettes and as mentioned above in the Lycoming 0-320 engine of my airplane.
It's a great "upper cylinder" lubricate.
It will do the same thing for your engine that it does for a lot of aircraft owners.... extends the life of some engine components.
It's essentially equivalent to oiling the engine from both "sides".
The crankcase oil takes care of lubricating from the bottom side. The Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel takes care of oiling from the top side.
It lubricates the valve stems and provides a slight lubrication for the piston rings. It also lubricates the valve and seat faces.
IMHO this stuff adds drastically to the life of an engine.
It hasn't caused any problem with my CATS on my Vettes (yesss even my Z06) or my LS1 Z-28. I have not experienced a single injector problem either.
I even run it in the gas for my lawn tractor.
It's fairly inexpensive, surely doesn't cause any harm and IMHO has some specific beneficial value for your engine.
I've never run it in my oil. Mobil One is satisfactory for the bottom side.
I do religiously run it in my fuel .
Ok, now you know one of my secrets for engine longevity.
I learned to use it from my Dad. I've seen a LOT of stuff come and go but MMO has stayed around for 50 years that I know of.
Yep, truly one of the great marketing jobs of the last 50 years-
here's a product that really doesn't do anything, really doesn't hurt anything, can show no valid proof via 3rd-party testing that it either helps or hurts anything, and doesn't cost too much so people won't miss any meals.... if they are careful to never make a claim and do no blanket advertising, they can perpetuate the myth forever thru word of mouth.
It's a fun exercise. Slick 50 tried it, but they got greedy and tried to push the model; Never put yourself in a position where you actually have to prove anything.
I run it in ALL my Vettes and as mentioned above in the Lycoming 0-320 engine of my airplane.
What kind of airplane you got, Jim? I had a Cherokee 140/160 for a short while. I was putting AvBlend in it until the mech said stop wasting your $$, and "off the record" he did speak positively about use of MMO in the fuel... But i've forgotten the ratio. Was it 10 ounces of MMO to so many gallons of 100LL?... ...as you can tell I've haven't been behind a prop in a while.

Re: Marvel Mystery Oil (CAJUN C4)
 Take a little Marvel mystery oil and pour it on a clean surface, then pour some auto tranny fluid next to it...if it looks the same, it's because it is IMHO
That's not to say it doesn't work, but so does tranny fluid when added to the gas in similar quantities.
Works great in diesel engines and doesn't hurt Carbed cars. Used to use it all the time but don't anymore. Just sort of forgot about it, thanks for the reminder
I have used it many times.I have built engines and used eather it or stp oil treatment on ever part in the engine as I put it together. I also use it in my boat engines when I store them for the winter .I start the engine take off the air cleaner and pour in the mystery oil in the carb. until it stalls out . then when I hit the starter in the spring the engine will start right up. for me it has worked many times. for many years. :chevy :auto:
I have a solution for all you skeptics:
DON'T USE IT.
Is that simple enough for you?
You have likely NEVER used it so why start now? Suits the heck outta me if you don't. No skin off MY teeth as they say.
For those of us that DO use MMO, we understand what it does and how it does it. And we will VERY likely keep using it.
If you think it's the same class and type of substance as Slick 50 and some of those other Teflon based products then you've never even seen the stuff.
It's really quite simple. If you don't want to use it, don't. It's not MY job to convince YOU in the first place.:smash:
You young whippersnappers THINK you know everything already.
You haven't learned yet that what YOU KNOW is the radius of the circle and
what YOU DON'T KNOW is the circumference of the circle.
Yep, Caveat Emptor. And if you are wary enough then there will always be some left on the shelf for ME and the other folks "in the know" that want the benefit of using it.
