Default LT1 starters

I think my starter has given up the ghost. I seem to have full power with the ignition on. Turn the key to start and I get a good solid click/thunk from the solenoid but the starter doesn't spin. Let it sit and maybe it will start right up, maybe not. :( It just started doing it yesterday and there is no indication that it's a battery problem and it's done it both cold and warmed up.

What are my options for a replacement? OEM or aftermarket?

Since I don't plan on getting rid of the car, when my starter when I took it to the dealer and got a lifetime warranty. Otherwise, I would have done it myself.

The stock LT1 starter is VERY good, I wouldn't really see much need in looking into the aftermarket options unless you can find one cheaper.

I've seen a stock LT1 starter spin over a 12.5:1 compression motor as if it was nothing, can't really beat that.

Before you replace the starter, check your battery connections and connections at the starter. As said previously, the LT-1 starter is great and usually doesn't fail this soon. Gee, today it's starters

Im agreeing with Strick-

You want to check to make sure the connections to the starter are not corroded. You can easily get under the car, and take off the wires connecting to the starter (make sure you disconnect the battery (-) terminal first) and clean them. Many times this fixes the problem.

If not, dont buy a new starter.. get the old one rebuilt. It will save you a bunch of money (chevy dealer wanted ~$350 or something for the starter.. I got mine rebuilt a few weeks ago for $80). Most alternator rebuild places can handle it.

Thanks, that's a good option I hadn't thought of. The way it acts it sounds like new brushes could be the cure. And as far as the trouble shooting goes, I plan to check everything I can to make sure it's the starter before I have to pull it out with the longtubes in the way. :cuss

The reason I mentioned aftermarket is I was wondering if any one had gone to a highpower mini-starter. I'll end up with a a high compression stroker eventually so I was looking towards the future. I'm always planning the next mods. :D
