Default alternator question !?

hello corvette people

I have a dumb question that it is buging me and can`t short it out !!! .... which size pulley makes the altenator turns faster , a smaller one or a bigger one ???

Becouse lately in the forum there is a bunch of questions about performance pulleys and when I installed the pulleys ( crank and altenator ) I had charging poblems !!! Now I went back to stock pulleys .

so my question is :
If I install only the crank pulley only and leave the stock altenator pulley will this works ???

and also with wich pulley the alternator will turn faster , with the big one that came with the kit or the small one that is stock !!??

Thanks :seeya

Think of it this way, when you install an underdrive crank pulley (smaller than stock) the crankshaft turns more revolutions per each revolution of the accessories, which still have their larger stock size pulleys.

Now in addition to the underdrive crank pulley, install an overdrive alt pulley (smaller than stock) and the alt now runs at it's stock speed again.

So the smaller crank pulley makes accessories run slower; a smaller pulley on an accessory makes that accessory run faster.

What you need is the alt pulley that's smaller than stock, like the one that comes with the March Power & Amp kit. And yes, it realy works; after installing the overdrive alt pulley my charging is now back to normal levels.

Ok now I got to ask a stupid question. If you install a underdrive crank pulley and a overdrive acc pulley, aren't you basicly back to the original stock configuation? Now I have to ask how does changing the pulleys inprove performance. I know a lot of guys do it but I don't quite grasp the concept.

Well guess another one is confused too :D

The thing that you gain performance is becouse the Crank pulley that will come with the Kit will be smaller and with the small pulley the accecories like A\C compressor , water pump , power stering compressor , AIR pump and altenator will turn slower that will be less drag to the motor and less drag = more HP then you will make the alternator pulley smaller so the alternator will be turning like it was in the original specs !!!!

But the :conehead that had sand me my kit send me a wrong alternator pulley becouse it was bigger not smaller , and I was having serious charging issues !!! :skep:
