Default Opti Upgrades

I am in the process of changing my opit from a 94 unit to the better 95-96 version. I Know the timing gear cover, opti and end of the cam are different. Is there anything else that is different and needs to be chagned?

Thanks!! :flag

This is what I had to change to convert my '92 LT1 to a '95 Opti:
1) The Opti-Spark
2) Timing cover
3) Timing gears -- I went to the GM "Extreme Duty Timing Set"
4) Camshaft -- I'm told that later models may not need this, mine did
5) Electrical harness to the Opti-Spark -- the connector on one end is different (just eject the pins and put in the same pin numbers in the other harness)
6) You need the vacuum harness from a '95 Opti-Spark (it has vacuum and pressure protection devices in it) to connect to a clean air source and the intake manifold vacuum -- I've seen some make their own, but I don't recommend it unless you use the protection devices too. These devices prevent a "backfire" in the intake manifold from pressurizing the Opti-Spark.

Are you sure you want to do this? It is easier to replace your OE opti and just change the cap to a 95-96 for venting. But if you're going to do it, I'd change the water pump to an electric one. Also, you're going to need to replace the timing cover so you'll need all the seals in the cover and get gaskets for the oil pan as well as the timing cover. I think the hardest thing for you to do is pulling that damper hub off because of the space you have to work in. I'm sure you're already getting plug wires and plugs and give some thought to the coil. That should completely replace your ignition system, except for the coil driver which sits right next to the coil. It's labor intensive, maybe a case'll do it. Just finished mine. :hurray:

PS. just saw tom piper's reply, and I agree with the timing chain replacement, you might as well, it's right there. For grins, take a look at http://www.corvetteclinicinc.com look under C-4 solutions and opti-spark.

Thanks guys for the quick replys!

I have most all the parts except the new chain and upper gear. I am putting a cam in, so I had it cut to fit the newer opti. So that should be all the needed parts.

Now time to get to work!

Tom Piper,

Can you give me part numbers for the parts that you ordered to complete the job? If possible, separate part numbers for the upper gear, lower gear and chain.

I'm going to refer you to Jeff (I think Chris replaced Jeff Kopp) at this site for that information: http://www.superchevyperformance.com...?ubb=forum;f=2

You get a forum discount there -- make sure you tell them you are from the Corvette forum.
