My 85 seems to be missing the slim line that runs from the metal lines on the passenger side of the engine compartment into the back of the intake manafold. Mine are capped off. Does anyone know what this line is for?

Re: Missing coolant line? (montie98)
I'm not quite sure what the other guy is talking about. Your intake manifold has no coolant passages in the rear. There's just a pocket up front that connects to the heater/throttle body line, two sensors, the thermostat, and both heads.
Are you sure you're not getting it mixed up with the EGR tube that you see on all the other L98s? The one with foil insulation on it, that is usually degraded and coming off? The 85 doesn't have this. EGR is routed though the heads internally, so no ugly tube.

Actually there is a coolant tube back there if I remember right.
Ok, see the fuel lines (2) .. look right next to them (right) there is a black hose that looks like it goes behind the engine. That's a coolant line that goes to the rear of the passenger head. :D
Now I'm curious. Does anyone have any pics of the line in question?
1990 L98 TPI.
Passenger side rear of engine.
Coolant line is highlighted in blue.
Closeup of the fitting under the distributor.
The coolant line runs from the back of the intake manifold to a "tee" by the wheel well. One end of the "tee" goes to the surge tank, and the other goes to the radiator.
It is my understanding that it is there to promote coolant passage in the rear of the manifold and to bleed off steam. I didn't think this showed up until the aluminum head cars though.
Yeah, there is no coolant line on an '85. My '87 had one but I took it off. It went from one of the hard heater core lines to the back of the manifold in front of the distributor on the passenger side. It went into a brass fitting at about a 45 degree angle. But I blocked off the EGR pipe as well. Less heat into the manifold the better. No codes.
I'm with Scorp.
Previous posts on this line have come to that conclusion. It's not big enough to have any affect on cooling , ie no flow.Certainly a delete option.
Many threads on this one - never a convincing answer. The line is to eliminate steam/air pockets at the rear of the engine, reducing a hot spot area. I think '88 was the first year and I don't know if '90-91 cars had it either. If you change manifolds to a mineram, etc. you do away with it. I've always wondered if it's needed - assuming you "pack" the cooling system properly. The replacement heater hose with the "T" built in is very expensive and hard to find too.
It's called an air blend pipe. The pipe allows any trapped air to be purged into the heater system and then into the rest of the cooling system. Pre 90, the radiator fill port is below the highest coolant point in the engine. The pipe helps eliminates a potential air pocket in rear of engine.
