I have been looking into installing an Eaton M90 supercharger into my 87.
I was planning on removing the air pump and moving the alternator to that location, then mounting the supercharger where the alternator was.
Has anyone tried installing more of these?
Can I use the LT1 alternator mount to relocate the alternator?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark
I've been looking into a Whipple Charger for my 91 Coupe, and I'm considering using the Carroll/ATI design where the Alternator is reversed, the Air pump removed, and the Blower installed on the driver's side. I'll need to keep it removable for smog reasons where I live, so I want it seperate as opposed to integrated with the intake manifold.
The whipple is very similar, except the eaton can be bought cheap from a junk yard. I would also like to keep the alternator facing the stock direction if I can. I need to take some measurements, things look like they will be tight between the engine and shock tower and limited hood clearance.
I must say that I'm having second thoughts about a blower. I just saw my friends newly rebuilt ford 5.0 engine last night. He was running a vortech with 8lbs of boost and it apparitely detoniated. The block actually split in half
the only thing holding it together was the intake and oil pan. Tuning is a big issue.

He broke the block...???
There was a lot wrong with that car I'm afraid, as a SC wouldn't cause that at 8PSI Pistons yes, but block no).
So what Eaton model can flow enough air for a 5.7L V8?
The Ford SBCs don't have a head bolt configuration that is conducive to boost like a small block chevy. Lots of the forced induction guys blow head gaskets then if they continue to drive on it, the block cracks.
I dont think that would be a good idea b/c you will have to put in alot of effort to make a custom made item to work like that. Also, now if you had an 84 vette, all you would need to do is take a blower, and then add the two TB's onto it. But on an LT1, or L98, I dunno. Im not saying it cannot be done, but for the time and effort, you can always go with a blower or make a custom TurboCharged Power adder?
here is a link to a junkyard POS that has 2 blowers on it as well.
Maybe it will give you some different ideas.
Interesting idea as the cardboard mock up of the Whipple I made is likely too hard to fit.
Perhaps two smaller Eaton 45's would be easier to package (vs one Eaton 95 or 112, or the big Whipple), though you'd have to have a common TB upstream from the SC's, so the plumbing would be a hassle.
Never the less, interesting...
NOTE: I'm not interested in holes in the hood, at least not big ones...
